Pomimo ogromnego potencjału w rozwiązywaniu aspektów, z którymi nie można sobie poradzić w inny sposób, penetracja s-SNOM do nauk przyrodniczych nadal postępuje w wolnym tempie z wyżej wymienionych powodów.

Mikroskopia fototermiczna: obrazowanie absorpcji optycznej pojedynczych nanocząstek i pojedynczych cząsteczek

Sygnał fototermiczny (PT) powstaje w wyniku niewielkich zmian współczynnika załamania w próbce na skutek pochłaniania wiązki światła grzejnego. Zmiany współczynnika załamania są mierzone drugą wiązką sondującą, zwykle innego koloru.
